Paul Mitchell Trio

T & L was an obscure Atlanta label owned by vocalist Liz Lands and her husband, '50s blues shouter Tommy Brown. The Paul Mitchell Trio led by pianist Mitchell was a mainstay on the Atlanta jazz and soul scene for many years backed Lands on her version of “Silent Night” the initial T & L release, and were name checked on the mainly instrumental flip.

This excellent deepie was the second release on the label, probably issued in 1967 and seems to have been Mitchell’s only name 45. The vocalist on all the Trio’s vocal selections is Allen Murphy who doubled up as their drummer and what a great job he does on this melodic tasteful and soulful number.

The first of Mitchell’s two albums is straight ahead jazz. But the second set featured several soul based songs including a recut of “Now I know What Loneliness Is” as well as covers of “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” and “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” among others.
