David Reynolds

A
nother of those hopeful Crescent City artists who never got the big break, David Reynolds had a couple of 45 to his name before fading back into obscurity.

H
is initial recording was for the tiny local label Krash. The top side ListenStay A Little Longer was a classic Crescent City slow ballad full of pumping piano, wailing tenor sax and a pleading vocal from Reynolds who sounds close to tears. I just love it to bits!

H
is final single was for Alon, the label that Instant / Minit’s Joe Banashak started in conjunction with resident genius Allen Toussaint. The top side was Reynold’s own dead slow deep ballad ListenCry Cry Cry on which he sounds suitably doom laden and desperate – do check out the occasional gripping falsetto phrases. The delicate arrangement came courtesy of that very busy New Orleans music man Eddie Bo.
