 Hornets
Hornets
This is the only 45 I know by this obscure New York group, and the only release on the same city’s Tic-Toc label, far removed from the Louisiana concern of the same name. But their gospel base is perfectly clear as they work their way through the heavy deep ballad You’re Gonna Need Me Again. The falsetto shrieks dovetail with the hard lead’s more usual range to super effect as the other guys drone out the chorus. I suppose you’d say that the nearest relations here are the 5 Royales, but they were way too polished in comparison with the Hornets.

Messy flip was written by Leo McCorkle – here called “Led MCorkly”.
